Volvo Teases Next Polestar Sports Car

Volvo tuning company Polestar has teased its next performance model, little more than a week ahead of its planned unveiling.

Officially released on Polestar Racing‘s YouTube channel, the 48-second clip provides an aural and semi-visual taste of the new car, showing its silhouette on a rolling road in a wind tunnel.

Set to be revealed in full on November 26, the growly sounding model will incorporate a turbocharged engine and an automatic transmission and will follow in the footsteps of the S60 Polestar sedan.

The most likely options for the car at this stage are a Volvo V40- or V60-based Polestar variant

Back in June, Polestar Performance managing director Haans Baath left the door open to a 258kW V40 Polestar production car after he declared development of such a performance hatch was merely “halted” by the shift in focus towards the S60 Polestar.

“This is just speculating now, but a V40 from Polestar would have been a five-cylinder with a four-wheel-drive system,” Baath said.

“There’s still a body shell in the workshop. If you asked our drivers and engineers, they would be very happy to do [a V40 Polestar].”

Alternatively, what appeared to be a Volvo V60 Polestar wagon was last month spotted lapping Germany’s Nurburgring wearing only light camouflage and fitted with aggressive body work, large-diameter alloy wheels and huge Brembo brakes.

The original Polestar production car, the 257kW/500Nm-plus turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder Volvo S60 Polestar, claims a 4.9-second 0-100km/h and is priced at $109,950, with just 50 units destined exclusively for Australia.

Polestar’s push from racing to production cars is no coincidence, with the tuning company being a key element of Volvo’s entry into the 2014 V8 Supercars series.
